El Gran Capitan
In December of the year 1500 Captain Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba
[succeeded in capturing a Turkish stronghold,
the bastion of Cephalonia, after a series of Venetian disasters,
[which showed that the Turks were invincible, uncontrolled.
Cephalonia, an Island off the western coast of Greece,
[had been in the hands of the Italian Tocco family until 1479,

[and these two decided to unit their army and naval fleet.
The victory that followed was a precursor
[to the final confrontation, a warm-up, a preheat.
Venetian captain-general of the Sea, Benedetto Pesaro,
[landed on Cephalonia and after a siege took the island's capital,
and after that went on to recover Santa Maura in the island of Lefkada,
[Cordoba and Pesaro, two leaders, intelligent, fighters, admirable.
