1532, Koroni, the waystation of pilgrims to the Holy Land

Holy Roman Empire flag
In 1532 Andrea Doria, a Genoese admiral, in Spanish servise seized several fortresses
[and thwarted Ottoman attempts to retake them, on the Greek coast.

As imperial admiral, he commanded several expeditions against the Ottoman Empire
[and with the capture of Koroni the Roman Holy Empire gained a key strategic post.

Koroni which was taken by Andrea Doria was called the chief eyes of the Republic
[and was the waystation of pilgrims to the Holy Land...

A port of refueling ships and millions of pilgrims where in traveled risking their very life,
[through the centuries, faithful Christians countless as on the seashore sand.
